Former Liverpool star Vladimir Smicer last night admitted he shed tears after injury ruined his World Cup dreams.
Smicer's hamstring problem has left him unable to train with his Czech Republic team-mates and with the start of the competition less than two weeks away, one of Liverpool's Istanbul heroes has conceded defeat in his battle to be fit.
Smicer said: "I sat down with the doctors in the morning and we reached this decision. I could not leave the coach, team-mates and myself in tension. There are only 10 days to the first match and I cannot train properly.
"I shed some tears. I felt awful after the elimination by Greece in Euro 2004, but I have never cried over football before."
